Nature’s Inspiration: How We Adapted Timeless Techniques to Create Wearable Art and West Coast Gifts

Updated: Feb 8

Inspired by Nature: The Heart of Our Journey

At The Mossy Coast, we are driven by a profound connection to nature. Living on Vancouver Island, we are continuously inspired by the landscapes that surround us, from towering trees to rugged coastlines. While we admired the beauty of existing nature-inspired designs, we recognized that many were interpretations of nature—man-made and man-drawn. This realization sparked a question: how could we capture the true, raw beauty of nature itself and create something that wasn’t just a representation, but a reflection of nature’s essence?

Redefining Nature Printing: Beyond Paper and Ink to Wearable Art

From Botanical to Gyotaku; Watch how

This pursuit led us to explore the art of nature printing, a technique that traditionally involves transferring the textures of plants, trees, and other natural elements onto paper. Our goal was to adapt this method to fabric, transforming it into wearable art. What began as an exploration of printing techniques evolved into a journey of discovery, where we learned to push the boundaries of what’s possible with natural materials and fabric.

The Art of Gyotaku: A Japanese Influence in Nature Art

A key influence in our work has been the traditional Japanese technique of gyotaku, which was originally used by fishermen to record the size and shape of fish before releasing them. We adapted this process to press natural textures—such as tree bark, feathers, and wildlife markings—onto fabric. Using water-based screen printing ink, we achieve highly detailed, lifelike prints that capture the raw textures of nature in a way that is both authentic and artistic.

Botanical Printing and Beyond: Embracing Nature’s Diversity with wearable art

In addition to gyotaku, botanical printing has served as an important reference throughout our journey. While we don’t press plants onto paper in the traditional sense, we have applied the principles of botanical printing to fabric, experimenting with a variety of natural elements. From ferns and pinecones to sunflowers, feathers, and even rocks, our approach has been about embracing nature’s diverse textures and translating them into designs that can be worn. Each new experiment pushes our craft further, continuously expanding the possibilities of what we can create.

Learning Through Trial: Our Evolution in Nature Monoprints and Wearable Art

The process of adapting these techniques has been one of continual learning. We’ve refined our methods over time, and through testing, we’ve developed our signature nature monoprints, which have become the foundation of our sustainable fashion line. Each print is a one-of-a-kind representation of the natural world, capturing its intricate details and raw beauty. Our commitment to craftsmanship and innovation has allowed us to create designs that are not only visually striking but also deeply connected to the environment.

At The Mossy Coast, we believe that clothing should do more than just serve as an aesthetic accessory—it should connect the wearer to the natural world. Whether through the rugged spirit of our bear hoodie or the symbol of strength in our axe talisman, each piece is designed to reflect the essence of nature. Our goal is to offer designs that celebrate the outdoors and provide a tangible way to carry that connection with you, wherever you go.
