Spring isn’t just for flowers—it’s for refreshing your space, your gear, and your habits. Here’s how we bring the Mossy Coast way into it.

Spring is the perfect time to refresh your home, workspace, wardrobe, and outdoor gear. Over the years, I have learned habits from my mother, her mother, and the traditions passed down through generations. A large portion of my practices were shaped during my time as an exchange student in Japan. Experiencing the culture firsthand taught me a mindful approach to daily life that has influenced me for life.

These tips are not a strict rulebook. They are practical ideas that we have found helpful, inspired by traditions from around the world, research, and personal experience. They are meant to be adapted to your own lifestyle and environment.

Refreshing Your Outdoor Gear

Outdoor gear is often forgotten when it comes to seasonal maintenance. Taking a few moments to care for it now ensures it will last longer and perform well throughout the year.

  • Shake out tents, sleeping bags, and blankets and allow them to air completely to prevent mold and mildew

  • Wipe down backpacks, boots, and other equipment while checking seams, zippers, and straps for wear

  • Wash lightly soiled clothing and lay flat or hang to air-dry

  • Air clothing and textiles outdoors when possible to remove stale odors and keep fabrics fresh

Allowing gear and clothing to breathe naturally is a simple way to ensure they are ready for the season ahead.

Spring Wardrobe Refresh

A seasonal review of your wardrobe helps maintain organization and prevents clutter.

  • Separate clothing into keep, donate, or recycle categories

  • Wash, repair, or treat garments before storing to prolong fabric life.

  • Fold or roll hoodies, tees, and sweaters for neat storage in breathable containers

  • Prioritize keeping items that are comfortable, practical, and meaningful

When I first learned about the Japanese practice of Osoji, a mindful approach to deep cleaning, I was struck by how thoughtful and deliberate it was. The process is not just about tidying, it is about creating an environment that feels calm and renewed.

Airing Out Your Home

Fresh air and sunlight can have a major impact on the atmosphere of your home. Many cultures have unique traditions for welcoming spring indoors

  • In Switzerland, rooms are “burped” by opening windows and airing out blankets and sheets

  • In Japan, Osoji encourages thorough cleaning, sweeping, and organizing every corner with mindfulness

  • In Sweden, Vårstädning involves airing furniture, refreshing pillows, and allowing sunlight to naturally cleanse interiors

  • In Morocco, spring cleaning often includes rearranging furniture, washing textiles, and adding natural scents such as mint or orange blossom

In Germany, there is a long-standing tradition called lüften, which translates to airing out the home. This is often playfully called “burping your house.” The idea is to fully open windows and doors for short periods, typically around ten minutes, to let fresh outdoor air quickly replace indoor air. This practice reduces humidity and condensation, lowering the risk of mold and odors while also removing everyday pollutants such as carbon dioxide and dust. Homes in Germany are often well-insulated, so this method refreshes the air without cooling the space too much. You can adapt this by opening your windows wide for several minutes each day to encourage natural ventilation, especially after cooking, showering, or other activities that add moisture to the air.

Even small bursts of fresh air can dramatically improve the feel and health of your home, making spaces lighter, cleaner, and more inviting

Caring for Clothing and Gear

Proper care is essential to keep clothing and outdoor gear functional and long-lasting

  • Use mild detergents and cold water for delicate fabrics to prevent damage

  • Air dry items whenever possible to preserve fibers and prints

  • Store seasonal clothing in breathable containers to prevent moisture buildup

  • Inspect items regularly for loose threads, small tears, or worn zippers and repair them promptly

Taking these steps reduces wear and ensures that your gear and clothing are ready for spring adventures

Mindful Cleaning

Spring cleaning can be approached as a mindful activity rather than a chore

  • Work systematically, one area at a time, to maintain focus and efficiency

  • Combine cleaning with natural ventilation to improve air quality

  • Step outside during breaks to stretch, breathe, and observe seasonal changes

Mindful cleaning allows you to refresh your environment while also promoting wellness and connection to nature
